Is the New Dyson Toothbrush Worth It?

A first look at the Dyson CameraJet—and what matters more than the technology inside your toothbrush.

By Lumina Smiles Dental 6 minute read

Dyson has put a camera, machine learning, an electric brush, and a targeted liquid jet into one $499.99 oral-care device. It is clever engineering. But is it five-hundred-dollars clever?

Our short answer

For most people, probably not—at least not yet.

For an enthusiastic early adopter who struggles with cleaning between the teeth and will actually use its features every day, it may be compelling. Consistent technique still matters far more than owning the most expensive tool.

What is the Dyson CameraJet?

Released in the United States on September 1, 2026, the CameraJet is Dyson’s first toothbrush. A 100,000-pixel macro camera analyzes images as you brush, identifies spaces between teeth, and triggers a narrow jet of liquid at those spaces. The system also offers sonic brushing, three intensity settings, app-based live viewing, a charging dock, and a travel case.

The idea addresses a real problem: toothbrush bristles do not clean tight spaces between teeth effectively. The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between teeth once a day with floss or another interdental cleaner.

What looks genuinely useful

It combines two habits

A device that makes interdental cleaning happen during brushing may help people who otherwise skip that step. The best cleaning tool is often the one you can use correctly and consistently.

The targeting is thoughtful

The camera is not included only to stream a dramatic view of your molars. Dyson says its Gap Optical Targeting system uses the camera to locate gaps and direct the jet. If it reliably improves coverage, that is a meaningful convenience.

Feedback can improve technique

Timers, pressure feedback, and coverage cues can help people slow down and notice missed areas. Seeing inside your mouth may also make daily care feel more engaging—if that kind of feedback motivates you.

Why we would wait before calling it a must-buy

The price is substantial

At $499.99, the CameraJet costs much more than proven powered toothbrushes and standalone water flossers. Replacement brush heads and compatible oral-care liquids add ongoing cost.

Launch claims are not the same as independent evidence

Dyson describes promising laboratory testing, but the product is brand new. We would like to see independent, peer-reviewed clinical studies comparing it with established powered brushes plus daily interdental cleaning over meaningful periods of time.

A jet may not replace every form of interdental cleaning

Different mouths need different tools. Tight contacts, open spaces, braces, implants, gum disease, and bridgework may call for floss, threaders, interdental brushes, a water flosser, or a combination. Your dentist or hygienist can tailor that recommendation.

Who might enjoy it?

  • Tech enthusiasts comfortable paying a premium for an all-in-one routine
  • People who consistently avoid a separate flossing step
  • Patients who find real-time visual feedback motivating
  • Households willing to maintain, charge, refill, and clean a more complex device

Who can confidently skip it?

If you already brush for two minutes twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth daily, and keep regular dental visits, you do not need a $499.99 toothbrush to have an excellent home-care routine. A comfortable soft-bristled brush, good technique, and a suitable interdental cleaner can do the essential work.

The Lumina take

The Dyson CameraJet is more than a gimmick: it is an inventive attempt to make interdental cleaning automatic. Yet its value depends on whether the convenience changes your behavior enough to justify the price. We are intrigued, but for most patients we would recommend waiting for more independent clinical evidence and real-world durability data.

Bottom line: impressive innovation, optional upgrade. Your daily routine—not the logo on the handle—does the heavy lifting.
